'If you give me Newey, he'll give me the best racing car'

Former Indy500 winner Bobby Rahal says that with Adrian Newey as a designer you don't need good drivers. Newey designed cars outside F1 for his Formula 1 career.

Adrian Newey has been one of the best Formula 1 car designers around for years. With Newey, Red Bull Racing had its greatest successes, grabbing four world titles in a row from 2010 to 2013 for both manufacturers and drivers. Before Formula 1 he was active in the American CART Series, now the IndyCar Series.

The car is more important than the driver

"I’ve always said, give me Adrian Newey and he’ll design the best race car and we won’t need the best driver to win", said Rahal in conversation with Motorsport Magazine. "Give him the money to design a car and you can hire a driver for less money and win races."

"Give the driver $2 million and Adrian $9m and you’ll get a lot more value out of your money than by giving it all to the driver. If you’ve got the best race car you don’t need the best driver", concludes the American.
