Ferrari had a far from easy season in 2020. During the first race, it immediately became clear that it was going to be a difficult year and with a sixth place in the championship, the Italians will not be satisfied either. Sports director Laurent Mekies told Motorsport-total that the first problems were already visible during the winter tests.

The Italian team finished 14th and 16th during the first week of winter testing, 2.4 seconds behind the Mercedes team. The second week of the test went a little better, but Ferrari already felt something was wrong.

"In Barcelona, we quickly realized that we had to be seriously concerned about some aspects of performance. While it's difficult to say what it means compared to the others when things aren't going the way they should, you know it's going to be difficult," says Mekies.

Ferrari did not know how long it would take to understand the problems. And they didn't know at all how long it would take to solve them. In March, when a large part of the world had to go into lockdown, the teams' factories also went into lockdown. This won't have helped Ferrari either.
