With Sergio Perez , Red Bull Racing has opted for a driver who does not come from its own training, thus breaking with a trend of recent years. However, according to Helmut Marko , the team could not do everything now.

The Red Bull course

Since their entry into Formula 1, Red Bull Racing have frequently called upon the talents of its own academy. Robert Doornbos, David Coulthard and Mark Webber were the only drivers who competed for Red Bull without a past with the team and Perez is now being added to that list.

"If a young driver is really important to us, he can be promoted again in 2022. For the first time in years we are bringing a Japanese talent, Yuki Tsunoda, to Formula 1, which is also super fast. In addition, we have Juri Vips, Jehan Daruvala and Liam Lawson, who, if the season in Formula 2 is good, will be able to make the step to F1 just like that," said Marko on ServusTV .

Now it is time for the title

The Austrian therefore does not see it as a failure that Perez has signed for the team. "It is not always possible to prepare an endless stream of talents for Formula 1. Teams that could present our figures would be proud. If our talents don't succeed in Formula 1, they can still earn their money by racing in other classes," added Marko.

However, the arrival of Perez now means that the excuses for Red Bull in 2021 are gone. "We have learned our lessons and there are no more excuses. The bike will be significantly better and everything Honda has promised so far they have been able to deliver. We can already see a clear benefit from that."
