The crash of Romain Grosjean in Bahrain was one of the most striking moments of the 2020 season. The Frenchman managed to get out of the crash with minor injuries, but the FIA has already indicated that there are enough factors that need to be properly investigated. At the FIA award ceremony, Jean Todt said that the crash was a motivation to continue with safety.

"When you see that, you have a kind of scary thought. Because you see on the television that a car explodes and fires. You don't know what happens next," explains Todt according to RaceFans. "After a few long seconds, which felt like hours, you see something come out of the car and then you know that he survived."

Grosjean provides information for the FIA

Todt sees a lot of room for improvement around safety. "It is something we have already discussed within the FIA, with a special group looking at security. That is of course at the top of our agenda with the goal of 'Vision zero,'" Todt says.

According to the boss of the FIA, there is still too much going on at the moment that could be done more safely. "Unfortunately, too often, especially in national championships, officials, drivers and co-drivers crash during events and we want to prevent that from happening." The Grosjean crash is therefore a good point to evaluate. "Of course we talk a lot about it because it was live all over the world."

A lot to understand for the FIA

Todt expects many new insights. "We need to understand why his car broke in two, why the fuel tank probably exploded and that's something we have to learn after every accident. Not just the accidents you see in the international media, but every accident that happens," concludes Todt.
