'Albon heard last minute about losing Red Bull seat to Perez'

Now that the appointment of Sergio Perez to the team of Christian Horner and Helmut Marko is a certainty, the next question concerns the future of Alex Albon with the team. Some clarification to this question is now being given as well.

Albon will remain with the team as a reserve driver, with the main focus on anticipating the developments of the Formula 1 car in 2022. Red Bull's official statement explains Albon's situation as follows: “Current driver Alex Albon remains an important member of the team and takes on the role of Red Bull Racing Test and Reserve Driver with a key focus on the 2022 development, simulator work, and tyre testing.” 

Informed late

According to Autosport.com, Albon was only informed about his reserve position within the team today, shortly before the news became public. This may imply that the team of Christian Horner and Helmut Marko were still considering the options until the last moment.
