Rinus van Kalmthout has finished his first season in the IndyCar Series, in which he became 'Rookie of the Year'. The 20-year-old Dutchman thinks he has enough talent to drive in Formula 1, but says he has more chances in the United States.

Difference in level

"I think the level in IndyCar and Formula 1 is equally high. Maybe it's a little harder to win in IndyCar because all cars are so equal", explains van Kalmthout in conversation with Motorsport.com. "You have to be a bit lucky and everything has to be right in IndyCar."

VeeKay has a lot of respect for Lewis Hamilton and what he shows in Formula 1. But even though he thinks the seven time world champion very good, he does think Hamilton's job is made a bit easier because of his strong Mercedes.

Talent for F1

Van Kalmthout thinks he can come along very well in Formula 1 himself. "I certainly think so, yes. You have to do it first to be sure, but I think I have the talent to compete in Formula 1 with a good team at the front."

However, according to the Dutchman, the chances were better in America. By means of a scholarship system you have more chance with talent than you would have in F1. "The pinnacle of motorsport is very cool, but if I do something I also want to win. And that's possible in IndyCar, at least there's a chance if you're good because the cars are the same", concludes VeeKay.
