Lewis Hamilton has won his seventh world title and his sixth with Mercedes. It is always said that it is because the British driver drives the best car, but the Mercedes driver has explained his role within the team and the development of the car.

Hamilton explains his influence

''I have, for example, put a lot of pressure on the team about where I want the aerodynamic balance. I've had it shifted little by little since 2014. The team makes a simulation that will tell you what the best car is, but that simulation can't do what I can. You also need feeling," said Hamilton in conversation with Motorsport.com.

''I also had to learn a lot. I've asked the guys a lot of questions and there have been times when I've been wrong. But I'm totally fine with being wrong sometimes. You learn from that. But the team now thinks more 'out of the box'. And then you have a good result or a good race and then you think: 'Look, let's be more open to ideas, even if they sound crazy. That's one of the elements that has helped us raise the bar, because now we might have a better approach than when I started here."

The Mercedes of 2021

"Unfortunately, people don't get to see all that work in the background,'' added the Brit, who is already working with his team on the 2021 car. Although the 2020 season is still in progress, Hamilton is already looking at the next season.

''I am always fully aware of where the next car will be, what its limitations are and what they are trying to concentrate on. Sometimes I go to the wind tunnel and ask the chief of aerodynamics to show me the car and tell me what the problems and obstacles are. I find that work fascinating," concluded the Mercedes driver.
