Toto Wolff will stay on for at least another year as team boss of Mercedes. The Austrian has told ORF that, but why has the Mercedes team boss suddenly changed his mind?

Modified plans

Wolff had already hinted several times in 2020 that he would take a step back in 2021. The Austrian wanted to be able to be a little more at home, and after seven titles he may have achieved all he wanted. However, Wolff now announced that he would stay on anyway and that is mainly because the successor is not yet ready.

''When the time is right, I will continue in another role. As shareholders (Wolff is also co-owner of Mercedes), we need to think about what is best for the team. Right now is not my time to leave, because we haven't found anyone yet to whom I can hand over the baton'', says Wolff to Motorsport-total.com.

Wolff still energetic

''I am busy trying to find the best man or woman to succeed me, but I haven't succeeded overnight. If I succeed, I can take on a new role. I've always been of the opinion that you shouldn't go from very good to good, because then someone else would be better able to take over,'' says Wolff, who has enough energy for the time being to remain team boss.

''I feel that I can still make a contribution, but I want to think ahead about how I want the structure of the team in the future'', concludes Wolff. Should a replacement be found for Wolff, it seems a matter of time before he is appointed CEO or chairman of one of the brands within Daimler.
