Given Honda's departure after the 2021 season, Red Bull Racing is looking to freeze engine development. This would allow them to take over the baton from Honda and continue with the power source themselves. However, not all teams agree with this, so it remains to be seen if it will happen.

Both Ferrari and Renault are against freezing of the engine development. Mercedes is happy with it, but team boss Toto Wolff doesn't see it happening.

"If two manufacturers don't like it, it can't be realised. They will have their reasons for refusing, but they were very clear about it. So, unfortunately, I don't see it happening," says Wolff to Motorsport-Total.com.

Alternative proposal

An alternative proposal could be to introduce a 'performance limit', whereby manufacturers are artificially slowed down in order to bring the field more into balance. But Wolff doesn't like that at all.

"That would be the beginning of the end for Formula 1. Introducing something like that into a sport that is so competitive would undermine the entire DNA of the sport."

But he does think it is an option to bring forward the new engine regulations of 2026, partly to make Formula 1 more sustainable. "I believe this generation of engines will prove that with the current hybrid engines we can take a big step into the new world."
