The FIA has announced that drivers no longer need to achieve 40 points to qualify for a super-license. From now on, drivers will only need 30 points, a change that was triggered by the coronavirus.

Quarter fewer points needed

The changes were confirmed in the latest update of the International Sporting Code of the FIA, Motorsport.com report. Drivers can now obtain a super license when they have scored 30 points in the relevant championships.

A driver can score 30 points by finishing in the top four of the Formula 2 championship or by winning the Formula 3 championship. When a driver applies for a super license, this application must be approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

Three best years

The points from the three best years in the last four-count, because the coronavirus caused a major setback in 2020. A driver who benefits greatly from the new regulations is Yuki Tsunoda, who still has a chance to win an AlphaTauri seat. His total points depend mainly on the number of points he scores in 2020, but because of his strong season, 30 points seems almost certain.
