With the departure of Honda, Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri will both be without an engine supplier in 2022. However, according to the two teams there is no possibility to choose a different engine from 2022 onwards.

Two for the price of one

Red Bull Racing switched to Honda power units in 2019 after Toro Rosso (now Alpha Tauri) tested them in 2018. The collaboration with the Japanese manufacturer was successful, so the whole Red Bull family started working with Honda. Now that the partnership is ending, however, the teams are both without engines.

Because Red Bull and AlphaTauri have used the same engine in recent years, AlphaTauri has also taken over many parts of Red Bull. For example, the Italian team no longer makes the gearbox itself, nor does it design the rear axle of the car. As a result, AlphaTauri cannot and does not want an engine different to Red Bull.

''It is more or less a 'two-in-one scenario'. With the integration of the powertrain, it is unthinkable that both teams will drive with different engines. That would create complex issues and it is therefore far from ideal for both teams," says Christian Horner according to Motorsport.com. Franz Tost fully agrees.

''We don't want any other source of power than Red Bull, because we are streamlining the process. I don't want to have to design the gearbox or the entire rear suspension again as a team. We're working closely with Red Bull Technology and we want to continue along that path," says Tost.
