In qualifying for the Eifel Grand Prix it was exciting right up to the last minute to see who would be able to get pole position between Mercedes and Red Bull Racing. Max Verstappen is pleased with the steps that have been taken.

In most qualifying sessions this year it was mainly a question of which of the two Mercedes drivers would get pole position. The other teams didn't come close on Saturday, but that seems to have changed now. For qualifying ahead of the Eifel Grand Prix it was exciting between Max Verstappen and the black arrows.

According to the Dutchman, this is purely due to the adjustments made to the chassis. "I think the engine is still the same. We've taken a number of upgrades with us, so the car now works a bit better. Since we only drove here today, we still need to analyse and optimize a lot of things, such as the understeer I was suffering from. But it is definitely a good step forward, we are on the right track. Hopefully we can keep going in that direction and continue to improve," said the Red Bull Racing driver at the FIA press conference after qualifying.

Understeer problems

The Dutchman is therefore happy with the performance of the RB16 today, except for the problems with understeer. "I don't like understeer. I think it went well at the start of qualifying, but then it slipped away from us. If you have understeer problems you can't take that mid-corner speed into corners, you have to use a V-style a bit more and you lose time. But still, it was a good qualification to be so close to Mercedes," Verstappen concludes.
