The first and second free practice sessions fell completely into the water on Friday. Although the conditions on the track were pretty bad, in the end it was the dense fog that caused both sessions to be completely cancelled.

This is because the trauma helicopter cannot take off safely in the fog in order to fly an injured driver to the hospital. The designated hospital is in Koblenz, which the FIA considers to be too far away with a simple ambulance.

From ambulance to helicopter

However, should it be so foggy again this weekend, the FIA has come up with a solution. The motorsport federation told Motorsport.com that ambulances now take an injured driver to a lower location before he is transferred there in a trauma helicopter.

This location is about three KM from the track. The Grand Prix section of the Nüburgring is some 500 metres above sea level and is therefore considerably higher than the surrounding valleys. The circuit is therefore more likely to suffer from low hanging clouds.
