Two different engines not an option for Red Bull and Alpha Tauri

Christian Horner believes it is not possible for Red Bull and AlphaTauri to use different engines from 2021, an issue Franz Tost seems to be in agreement with.

Due to Honda's news last week that the Japanese engine supplier will step out of F1 following 2021, Red Bull and AlphaTauri are in the market for a new engine. It will be difficult to find a manufacturer within the existing suppliers who want to deliver to the teams, as Mercedes is already at its maximum capacity and Ferrari is not really an option. The relationship with Renault is still a sensitive subject.

At this afternoon's press conference, the question was asked whether it would be possible for Red Bull and AlphaTauri to use two different engines, but according to Horner that is not possible. "It is a two-for-one scenario. Because of the whole way the car is built up and how the engine should fit in the car, it is unthinkable that the two teams could have different sources of power. That would cause all sorts of problems, it would really be far from ideal."

Franz Tost, AlphaTauri's team boss, doesn't like the idea either. "I can't add anything, this is what I said earlier. We want the same engine as Red Bull because of the synergy we have built up over the last few years. We don't want the teams to have different power units."
