With Honda leaving Formula 1 at the end of next year, the eyes are now on Red Bull Racing, because what are they going to do? Their goal this year was to make Max Verstappen the youngest champion ever, but once again the gap to Mercedes turned out to be too big. Next year they will have a new chance, but it doesn't look like the situation will be much different then. Honda continues to do everything it can, despite a smaller budget.

Departure with head raised

Speaking to The Race, Honda F1 managing director Masashi Yamamoto said: "Our aim is now to exit the sport without making big [negative] changes in the sport."

In other words, they want to perform to the best of their ability right up to the last minute, and they are even aiming for the championship in 2021.

"We still have seven more races to go this year first and we have various things we like to try for next year as well," says Yamamoto, suggesting that Honda still has developments in the pipeline that might bring that little bit extra to challenge Mercedes even more. He doesn't go into detail, but there is no lack of ambition.

"Next year we will try to fight for the championship and have a good ending to our story. For next year, we will not reduce any people from our project. We are going to develop more. And we will make the biggest effort in order to win as much as possible. We will just keep pushing till the end," Yamamoto said.
