After two years of absence, Fernando Alonso will return to Formula 1 next season, with the Alpine F1 Team. The two-time world champion made successful trips to the 24 Hours of Le Mans (winners in 2018 and 2019), the Dakar Rally and the Indy 500, but will now make a new attempt in Formula 1.

A nine in everything

Alonso is generally regarded as one of the better Formula 1 drivers of recent decades and as one of the most complete drivers. Something he himself can confirm. "I consider myself to be quite complete - maybe I score nine in everything. I think I’m close to the top in many circumstances and categories," he told the official Formula 1 website at a press conference for the Amazon Prime documentary series Fernando.

Adaptability

According to Alonso, the fact that Alonso has tried out different racing classes in recent years also helps him. "You discover yourself as a driver who can adapt to any car, circumstance or category, and you start to harness that for your own benefit. You’re aware of your limitations - you try to hide them to not give any openings to your rivals or opponents. But your qualities, you try to emphasise them. And that’s what I intend to do - I try to emphasise them better than others.”

Triple crown of motorsport

For some time Alonso has been preying on the triple crown of motorsport, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500. Only the latter is still missing on his resume. However, the Spaniard will have to wait a little longer, as team boss Cyril Abiteboul recently confirmed that Alonso will not be allowed to compete in the Indy 500. Until now only Graham Hill managed to win the triple crown of motorsport.
