Reverse grid? 'The dominance of Mercedes, that's the issue'

With half of the 2020 F1 season now completed, the races have proved to be rather predictable in most cases. Especially at the front of the field, where Mercedes is perhaps more dominant than ever. As a result, McLaren have faced a large backlog, but team boss Andreas Seidl does not want artificial means to make the races more exciting.

For example, there has been a lot of talk in recent months about Ross Brawn's plan for a reverse starting position or F1 races that do not count towards the world championship. According to Seidl, however, such measures are neither desirable nor necessary.

"Honestly, I don't see that we need it. One team with, let's say, the big resources having made simply a sensational job compared to the other two, unfortunately that ended up this year in the dominance of Mercedes. That's the issue," Seidl said to Motorsport.com.

Seidl stressed that he believes Mercedes absolutely deserve the success but also hopes that the new technical regulations of 2022 will bring the field closer together. “That's the reason why I'm not a fan of introducing any artificial randomness into Formula 1 because that's for me not F1.”
