Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri are currently without an engine supplier for 2022. The big question is of course, who is going to supply the two teams with engines now that Honda is leaving Formula 1? Formula 1 journalist Lawrence Barretto has suggested some of the possibilities.

Return to Renault?

"Under the current rules, Red Bull’s old friends Renault would be obliged to supply them and AlphaTauri with engines as they currently have the fewest customers", said Barretto in his analysis on F1.com. From 2021, Renault will only build engines for its own factory team that will become known as Alpine. McLaren will switch to Mercedes power in 2021.

"Red Bull would likely want to avoid rekindling that relationship, while Renault won’t fancy it either having been so bruised towards the end of their time together," Barretto continued. However, the journalist thinks there may be no other choice.

Build their own engines

Because Ferrari and Mercedes have already turned down the opportunity to supply engines to Red Bull, it does not look as if they are going to do so this time, Barretto thinks. "Red Bull may just have to take some short-term pain, while they either attempt to get their own engine project up and running or convince a new manufacturer to join the party," concluded Barretto.
