Lewis Hamilton is best known as a champion of equality and diversity among current Formula 1 drivers, but Daniel Ricciardo is also increasingly becoming a figurehead in the fight against racism. However, he has also come in for a great deal of criticism.

Criticism of outspoken opinion

During the most recent Formula 1 weekend in Sochi, Ricciardo wore a mask with the word 'equality' written on it, inspired by Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka. Let it be known that the Australian driver is more and more outspoken when it comes to subjects like racism. Something that often comes in for criticism.

"As far as the social media are concerned, I try not to read too much. You get 95% of the positive news, but it's the 5% that make you angry," says Ricciardo on Motorsport.com. "You are not going to be able to get 100% of the people behind you, unfortunately it doesn't work that way."

Let your voice be heard

Despite the criticism that the Renault driver has received, he has become increasingly open-minded over the course of the year about these issues, which are difficult for many people. He also found it difficult to talk about them at first. "Once you start talking about these kinds of subjects, whether we are talking about racism or mental health, it is quite difficult. You expose yourself to criticism and negative feedback. Especially when it comes to racism. A big problem is silence, and that is what I am trying to discourage: if you have a voice, let it be heard", Ricciardo explains.
