Wolff: "Then you get to a point where the result becomes predictable"

Mercedes is worried about boring races. The team says they are not in favour of reversed grid races, but admits that 2020 is not particularly exciting. The German team itself comes up with other ideas.

Radio traffic

One of Mercedes' ideas is to make all radio traffic public. Currently, fans can only follow the radio traffic between driver and engineer via the F1TV streaming service and selected messages are also broadcast on television.

According to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, there is a lot hidden behind some boring looking races. Making radio channels public could bring more excitement, he thinks. "That would show how much drama is actually behind a race victory," says Wolff to Motorsport-Magazin.com.

It seems easier than it is

As an example, Wolff takes this year's race at Spa-Francorchamps, which was won by Lewis Hamilton. "If you see Spa and you think it was a 'walk in the park', you are wrong. It wasn't an easy race at all. We weren't sure if we would make it with a stop, like many other teams. If this went to the TV, it would cause more excitement."

Wolff says he's against reversed grids, but understands that the fans are hoping for variety. "Sport should provide entertainment. If Usain Bolt wins every race and Bayern Munich wins every championship, you get to a point where the result is predictable and not varied enough, and that's what the fans are hoping for." So Mercedes is open to change and comes up with suggestions, but let it be known that those suggestions do not affect its own performance.
