Team boss Toto Wolff tells us that a role like Niki Lauda once had at Mercedes is not an option for him. Lauda had a non-executive role at Mercedes from 2013 until his death in May 2019.

Uncertainty about the future

Lewis Hamilton joined Mercedes through Lauda, among others. Wolff still hasn't clarified his future as team boss at Mercedes, but he has indicated that he prefers to stay with Mercedes.

"What we are doing is the best sport. I’m so passionate about the sport and I don’t want to give it up," Wolff explains to Channel 4. "I don’t see myself in a non-executive role like Niki had at the end, more of an executive role, I want to choose how many Grand Prix I go to, how much I’m being involved, not annoying our chief strategist anymore with my inputs during the race or asking semi-professional questions to the technical director and the chief engineer."

Role of team boss is obsolete

According to Wolff, the role of team boss is outdated in modern Formula 1. "I’m not sure that the concept of team principal works in Formula 1 anymore, " says the Austrian. Wolff prefers to see the roles split in the future because he is responsible for 2000 people.
