Alexander Albon was the target of a lot of criticism in recent weeks. Max Verstappen's teammate was under pressure to return to AlphaTauri, but Albon responded by taking his first podium at Mugello, finishing behind both Mercedes.

"The downside is that sometimes he's a little too nice in that respect," said Horner in an interview with Sky Sports. The Red Bull team boss knows that Albon is at his strongest when he gets into the car. "When he puts on his helmet, he's a real racer."

In recent weeks the Austrian race team has been linked several times with the return of Pierre Gasly and the possible signing of Sergio Perez or Nico Hulkenberg. Horner doesn't want to know anything about this and thinks Albon is now on the right track.

"Albon's problems were mainly related to the instability at the back of our car, as was already the case with Pierre. Max is not really affected by this. But I expect that things will be more his way now."

Ricciardo not easy to catch up

Getting a podium place on the Italian track was not easy for Albon.

"Our starts so far have been very bad," said Horner. "We must also remember that Daniel (Ricciardo) is certainly not the easiest driver to overtake."
