Sebastian Vettel will remain in Formula 1. After this season, the 33-year-old German will swap Ferrari for the ambitious Racing Point, where he will take over Sergio Pérez's seat. This puts an end to months of speculation. The team will be named Aston Martin for the 2021 season.

The marriage of Vettel and Ferrari never brought as much happiness as had been hoped and expected beforehand. As a four-time world champion on behalf of Red Bull, Vettel became one of the best drivers in Formula 1 history. At the Scuderia, where Vettel has been driving since 2015, he was unable to add to his championship haul. The highest achievable was second place in 2017 and 2018, behind world champion Lewis Hamilton. Last season Vettel drove his Ferrari to fifth place.

Next season, Vettel will start his 15th uninterrupted season in the king's class, after making his debut at Sauber in 2007. Vettel's transfer gained momentum after it became known that Vettel had to make his choice before July 31st to go to Racing Point. That team had a clause in Sergio Pérez's contract. The Mexican could be bought off for a considerable sum of money.

Number four

As a result, Vettel is retained in Formula 1 and joins one of the circuit's strongest performing teams. Racing Point is in fourth place in the constructors' championship with the Mercedes-like car, just above number five Ferrari. The Italian race stable previously took over Carlos Sainz from McLaren, to serve as Charles Leclerc's crony in 2021.

Sergio Perez announced on Wednesday evening that he would no longer be driving for Racing Point after 2020. This opened the door for the arrival of Sebastian Vettel, who was thus crowned the following morning as the new driver of Aston Martin in 2021.
