Since 1996 the Australian Grand Prix has been shown at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, but that could change. In the south of Australia they want the race back in 2021.

Between 1985 and 1995 Adelaide was the proud owner of a Formula 1 race. It was until then the only circuit in Australia to have organised an official Formula 1 race, but was taken over by Albert Park in 1996. Now the Prime Minister of South Australia, Steven Marshall, would like to take the race back to the south.

Australian Grand Prix away from Albert Park?

''We're not going to show off here, but we have a great circuit in South Australia. We don't have the facilities to get the F1 into town, so the only option is a race on The Bend'', says the South Australian Prime Minister about the circuit in Tailem Bend, which is over seven kilometres long, but with different layouts possible. The circuit is also located a few kilometres from Adelaide, where the first Grand Prix in Australia was held.

Besides the prime minister, the circuit owner, Dr. Sam Shahin, is also optimistic about the chances for The Bend. ''We are certainly thinking of making ourselves available. Nothing compares to our circuit and facilities. It's not for nothing that it won the motorsport facility of the year award in 2019. There can be an F1 race, so we are not afraid to take on this challenge'', says Shahin in the FIVEaa Breakfast show.
