The responsibility for the performance of the chassis of a Formula 1 car usually lies with the technical managers. For example, Adrian Newey was made aware of his 'design skills' when he built four World Championship cars for Red Bull Racing. However, Mclaren's technical manager, James Key, doesn't think the responsibility sits purely in that way

Key believes that Formula 1 cars have become so complex that many areas of construction come together. Key's role is more focused on influencing and making the right decisions: "Where are the priorities? What risks can we take?"

Mclaren on the right track

This year Mclaren have continued to build on the foundations that were laid last year, yet Key remains modest: "I certainly had some influence. And in the end the car falls back on me because no one else is responsible for it - but it is actually a team product. This is thanks to the excellent boys or girls who work within the team and decide what we do year after year," Key told Motorsport-Total.com.
