Max Verstappen came second during the Spanish Grand Prix, but was also frequently heard on the on-board radio. What is going on behind the scenes and is it right or wrong that Verstappen makes himself heard this way?

Verstappen doesn't see everything

''Of course you have the driver and the engineer you hear, but behind that engineer is a whole room full of engineers who collect all the data from all the drivers and figure out how to finish that race as fast as possible. Max can't see at all what's happening behind him on the track,'' says Christijan Albers in the podcast of De Telegraaf.

According to the former Formula 1 driver, Verstappen was not quite right afterwards. ''Max says it's easy for him to catch up with those guys from Racing Point, but now he is just 50 percent right. You always have to be a bit careful with this, because everyone here is a complete fan of Verstappen'', Albers sounds cautious.

Verstappen is not always right

''Lambiase (the racing engineer from Verstappen) can see where he's driving and where the opponents are. Everybody suffers from those tires, so maybe driving through that has made him a better tire in the end. However, you often hear this on the radio, only it's not always broadcast''.

Verstappen, however, drove to a neat second place again, although Valtteri Bottas was especially disappointed. ''Max of course just does his job and is just extremely good. Qualifying was strong again this weekend, where he drove one less lap at Silverstone and had to leave Hulkenberg in front of him. On the other hand Bottas just messed up too'', Albers concludes.
