Max Verstappen has been compared to Ayrton Senna before because of his great racing talent. Mark Hughes, F1 expert and journalist, also sees resemblance between both drivers. Although he doesn't see any similarities in driving style. He sees this resemblance mainly in the career development of Senna and Verstappen.

Verstappen vs. Hamilton and Senna vs. Prost

On TheRace.com the Brit kicks off: "Finding similarities between different drivers from F1 history is always a bit problematic. One driver is never a reincarnation of another. But the career of Verstappen is very similar to that of Ayrton Senna before the latter drove at McLaren".

"Senna threw a spanner in the works in his Lotus-Renault, yet Alain Prost was regarded worldwide as the number one in this time at McLaren. Senna was only a future challenger. However, I don't want to say that Verstappen and Senna have the same character or the same driving style".

Verstappen at Red Bull is reminiscent of Senna

"However, there are some similarities to be discovered between the years of Verstappen at Red Bull while Mercedes dominates and the seasons of Senna at Lotus when McLaren dominated", continues Hughes.

"I was annoyed by the dominance of Prost and the sounds of everyone who said he was the best driver at the time. I can imagine that for many fans now Hamilton is the same. Since I am professionally involved in F1, I don't see it like that anymore".

To decide who is the best driver of the moment, a showdown in the same car would be an ideal outcome. According to Hughes this is also the reason why he was annoyed by the fact that Senna wasn't seen as the number one.

About a transfer from Verstappen to Mercedes, the connoisseur says: "It would be a battle of titans, in which they would challenge each other [Verstappen and Hamilton, ed.] to go to the extreme. There's no way you could predict who will win which weekend."

However, Hughes makes a cautious assessment: "In general I think Hamilton would win from Verstappen in the end. It's just a guess. You don't know how this ends until it actually happens."
