Mercedes once again set the pace at Silverstone as they topped FP1 at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. The German team were untouchable as Valtteri Bottas led Lewis Hamilton for a 1-2.

The Mercedes duo had Max Verstappen as their closest competitor, with the Dutchman ending the session third. P3 seems to be a common position for Verstappen as he seems to be the only real competition to the black cars.

Nico Hulkenberg looked good, finishing the session fourth ahead of Charles Leclerc.

In a quiet opening to the session it was Ferrari who set the early pace, with Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel trading fastest laps.

The Red Bull of Alex Albon split the two Ferraris, as did Hulkenberg at the halfway stage.

Hulkenberg is once again replacing Sergio Perez after the Spaniard tested positive again for coronavirus ahead of this weekend.

The German went even faster with half an hour to go, beating Leclerc’s time to go third.

With thirty minutes left in the session, Max Verstappen finally emerged from the pits to set a quick lap, immediately going third behind Bottas and Hamilton.

There were more positive signs for Williams as George Russell and Nicholas Latifi finished the session in 15th and 16th respectively.

Alex Albon had more struggles but manage to finish sixth, ahead of Vettel, Lance Stroll, Daniil Kvyat and Esteban Ocon.
