Alfa Romeo driver Antonio Giovinazzi has been given a chance by the FIA stewards, after he caused a red flag in the first free practice in Great Britain. The Italian evaded a penalty.

Giovinazzi left debris on the track after he spun. His tyres were so badly damaged that the rubber ended up on the track. Giovinazzi decided to drive his car back to the pits himself, but that was against the rules. He should have parked his car at the side. Because of the mess at Silverstone the red flag was waved, which temporarily stopped the session. "The stewards felt that the driver was acting in a way that was potentially dangerous to other drivers as he continued at speed and without caution to the pit lane, causing debris to end up on the road".

Warning

Still, it was just a warning for Giovinazzi, who does get an warning. The Italian is the first driver with a  'record' in 2020. "In determining the penalty, the stewards have compared this incident with other practical incidents in recent years and have chosen to make use of the warning that is new to them under the International Sporting Code". Multiple warnings can ultimately lead to a penalty.
