Is Red Bull staying behind or is McLaren shooting strong? According to the analyses of the German news medium Auto Motor und Sport, the gap between the two race stables has narrowed considerably. Not only is the difference between 2019 and 2020 smaller, but also the difference between the last three races is getting smaller.

McLaren is third in the constructors' championship behind Red Bull Racing and Mercedes. In the race McLaren hasn't been able to make life for Red Bull really difficult, after all, they also had a problem with Racing Point, but AMuS' analyses show that McLaren is making great strides towards Red Bull.

Team Chief Andreas Seidl indicated that the team is about as fast as Renault and Ferrari at the moment. Mercedes is a special case, because they are way ahead. From Racing Point Seidl does feel the hot breath. In the meantime Red Bull is starting to feel the hot breath of McLaren more and more.

McLaren catches up with Red Bull

According to AMuS' calculations of speeds and times over a complete lap and the best driven sectors, the gap in Austria had shrunk by 0.511 seconds in McLaren's favour. The difference is measured by the differences from last year on the same track.

So in one year McLaren has grown half a second towards Red Bull. The third race of this season showed even greater growth. Hence AMuS' conclusion that McLaren is catching up with the Austrian team. At the Hungaroring the team was only 1,111 seconds behind Red Bull compared to last year.
