Abiteboul didn't just say Alonso: 'It's not that we had no other choice'

Fernando Alonso returns to Renault in 2021. It's a big name that Cyril Abiteboul conjures up from the top hat, but retrieving the Spaniard is, according to him, by no means a choice for lack of better.

The transfer carousel started early in 2020. Even before the start of the season it became clear that Sebastian Vettel will leave Ferrari, Carlos Sainz will take his place and Daniel Ricciardo will move on to McLaren. The spot at Renault was still available and Vettel announced that he had spoken to the French race team.

Vettel also a contender

''It's no secret that you talk to different drivers on the paddock, but I don't want to mention any specific names," says Abiteboul according to Motorsport-total.com. Vettel himself said he had been talking to Racing Point and Renault, but that nothing has come of it yet.

The fact that Renault is taking Alonso out again is therefore not an easy option, but rather a well-considered decision. ''It was a clear decision for us as a team. It's not that we had no other choice. This was just the best solution'', said Cyril, who managed to reinstate a great driver after Daniel.
