Pierre Gasly was able to walk in the paddock with a smile after the Austrian Grand Prix. Nobody expected him to be seventh after he qualified on the twelfth place and not at all after his team wanted to call him in to retire.

''If someone had told me beforehand that we were going to be seventh on Sunday, I would have signed up for that right away. We knew it was going to be difficult to beat McLaren, Renault and Racing Point, but I managed to stay out of trouble. However, we were close to retiring the car," says Gasly to Formule1.de.

Gasly almost gave up

"In round ten, the team asked me to come to the pits. The temperature of the brakes went up the roof and the brake pedal felt very soft. It stayed in the same position for two laps and it was mainly irritating and above all dangerous," said the Frenchman, who didn't want to give up.

''They gave me the choice and I wanted to continue. In a couple of laps it went better with the brakes and not much later it went perfect again. If you are rewarded with a seventh place in the end that is of course nice. We didn't have it easy in the run-up to this season, but we didn't give up'', concludes the AlpaTauri driver.
