For Max Verstappen the qualifying went on Saturday, as he had expected. For the rest of the field, but behind both Mercedes cars. For the race on Sunday the Dutchman hopes that his strategy on the mediums will work to his advantage. From the first moment the Dutchman will have to attack the cars of the German Mercedes.

"It's nice to start third. The hole to Mercedes is actually too big. We just can't get here fast enough in a single lap, so we really need to look at that", the Dutchman says at Sky Sports F1. "Fortunately we have a different strategy for tomorrow, because we will start on different tyres. It will also be warmer. So it will be different tomorrow."

A good start this year

The driver of Red Bull Racing does indicate that the other circumstances on Sunday do not mean that he is suddenly the fastest. "Of course that doesn't mean that Mercedes is slow all of a sudden, but I do hope that our strategy can ensure that we close the gap a little more and that we can fight Mercedes."

The high temperatures mean that keeping the tyres in good condition is going to be an important factor. Verstappen is known for its good management around the tyres and expects that to play a role tomorrow. "It already felt good with the medium on Friday and then it was a bit cooler. We just have to hope that the rest will encounter some problems. For us it's just important that we at least get off to a good start, because I don't want a repeat of last year", said Verstappen.
