Due to the coronavirus, Formula 1 has been at a standstill for a number of months. As a result, many teams lost valuable sponsor income. Several teams had to send team members on leave or dismiss staff. Now that we are finally racing again, teams are slowly looking to the future. The budget cap is one of those things the teams are looking forward to. From 2021 onwards there will be a budget cap, which will be lower and lower in the following years.

According to Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, the budget cap is a step in the right direction. "I'm extremely pleased with the final outcome. I think it will make the sport more sustainable. It's all going to be a lot more competitive so the fans will be the big winner in the end," Zak Brown said in the F1 Nation podcast.

Red Bull big winner

As the sport becomes more attractive to the fans, the teams will also benefit from it. "Eventually the sport will attract new fans and this in turn creates more television revenue, more countries wanting to organize a Grand Prix and more sponsors wanting to commit to F1. It took a while for everything to become official, but as it is now, is probably the right decision", Brown expected.

"The top teams will surrender and a number of midfield teams are already on the budget cap, including ourselves, Racing Point, Renault and AlphaTauri. Red Bull Racing will definitely use AlphaTauri in the future as they have two teams that can share the costs. If I were Helmut Marko, I certainly would. They are likely to be a big winner of the budget cap," Brown said.
