In the middle of the corona crisis, Williams announced that the sponsorship agreement with RoKiT was immediately terminated. Williams was already tight on cash and according to many this decision was a strange one to make in that period. Claire Williams now explains to Autocar why the team made that decision and what the goal is for the future around Williams.

"We talked about needing a new investment last season, even before the virus was known. We decided that if we ever wanted to return to the top of F1, we would need support that is greater than just the prize money or sponsorship money", says Williams. Selling the entire team was also one of the options.

Selling the team is an option

"Our main goal was to find the best solution for the team, if that meant selling everything, that would have been okay. Even if it led to a partial sale of the team, that would have been it". Williams said earlier that he wasn't open to selling the team, but seems to come back to that now.

"The best thing would be if there is someone who wants to work with us on the future. We could probably put everything together now to continue, but we've been doing that for the longest time. It's time for a change." That change will come in the coming years, with the budget cap. According to Williams that will have a big impact on the future of the team. "We have come together and have realized that we have to create equality within the sport and that we have to reduce costs", said Williams.
