In 2008 Robert Kubica seemed to be competing in the World Championship for a long time. BMW, however, chose to stop improving the car halfway through the season, to focus on 2009, because in that year KERS would be introduced. Kubica has always said that he never liked that decision and 12 years later Kubica's opinion remainns the same.

In an interview with GP Racing Kubica talks about his expectations of that season. "We didn't have the fastest car, that's a fact. Normally the fastest car would win the championship, but not in this case. Somehow we always managed to take advantage of the mistakes of others, so we led the championship without being the fastest. I think 2008 was the only year that I could fight for the Championship".

Use every possibility

Still, BMW decided at that time not to take the chance of a world championship. "Sometimes you have to use possibilities, because you don't know if you will ever get the same chance again," Kubica thinks out loud.

In 2008 it was Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton fighting for the championship, a battle that lasted until the last corner in the last race, where Hamilton eventually won the championship.

"Ferrari and McLaren were stronger than the rest, but had technical problems and made mistakes. That's what put me in the lead of the championship, without driving the fastest car. I remember starting sixth in Fuji and after a lap in first place, I finally finished second. However, I'm sure that if I had the brakes that I had tested three months earlier, we would have won that race," Kubica said.
