Now that a large part of the grands prix in Asia and probably America will not go through this year, they are looking for European replacements. Circuits that haven't been on the calendar for a long time or even never at all, are being considered.

In Italy, besides Monza, there are even two other racetracks to organize a Formula 1 race. Both Imola and Mugello say they are fully prepared for a grand prix, but the chance that they can both organize a race is very small. So there's been a little struggle.

Andrea Cremonesi of La Gazzetta dello Sport thinks Mugello is going to win that battle. "Imola is just too narrow for today's Formula 1 cars, they're way too wide for that circuit. There are hardly any overtaking possibilities there and the entrance to the pit lane is right next to the ideal race line, there is only a wall in between", the journalist says to RTL.

Mugello also better in other areas

Although Formula 1 cars have driven on the Imola circuit before, even in the 80's, when the cars were even wider than now, Cremonesi did have a point that there wouldn't be a lot of passing there. In the last years that Formula 1 came here, Imola was quite notorious for it. However, for the Italian there is another reason why Mugello is a better option.

"It is logistically better for Formula 1 and it would mean that Ferrari's 1000th F1 race could be held on their own circuit", Mugello has been considered the most important test track of Ferrari alongside Fiorano for years.
