The budget cap that will enter Formula 1 from 2021 is good news for the sport, because it will bring the participants closer together. However, the top teams now have to look for ways to get under the budget cap.

Whereas Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing have given up on the other teams in recent years by being able to spend more money than the competition, this will be stopped with the budget cap from 2021 onwards. The teams spending around $300 million will only be allowed to spend $145 million from 2021 and that will cause changes.

Mercedes in F1

''We have accepted the budget cap because we also see that we are living in a different time now. Daimler is happy with this future and the fact that we can reduce costs now. For us as a team, however, this means that we have to adapt and deploy staff in other areas. We have Mercedes Benz Applied Science, but who knows another race class might also be an option," said Toto Wolff in conversation with Motorsport.com.

Mercedes is not considering leaving F1 for the time being. ''You read something new every day, but the management sees Formula 1 as the core of our brand. Our first car was a racing car. So it is not only a marketing tool that can bring us money, but it is also part of our DNA'', concludes Wolff about the future of Mercedes.
