FIA, in consultation with Ferrari, introduces new controls on oil consumption

The FIA announced on Thursday that it is introducing two new guidelines to control, among other things, oil consumption in Formula 1. The intention is that these controls will be more accurate and there will be less room for interpretation of the rules. These new guidelines have been made in consultation with Ferrari, according to The Race.

The latter is a result of the secret agreement made by the FIA and Ferrari after the investigation into the 2019 power source of the Italian team was completed. Part of this agreement was that Ferrari was allowed to assist the FIA in enforcing the regulations on oil consumption.

The new guideline to better control the oil consumption consists of new procedures for measuring oil consumption and then sealing the car, so that it can't be tampered with. This will ensure that the teams adhere to a consumption of 0.3 litres of oil per 100 kilometres.

In addition to these stricter controls on oil consumption, they have worked on a new sensor that measures the distribution of energy from the various ERS systems. This will be placed on the cars of Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing from the first race onwards, after which the other teams will follow.
