It's an important time for the Mercedes Formula 1 team. Not only the drivers' contracts expire, but also the contract of team boss Toto Wolff. So the question is what the future of Mercedes will look like.

At the end of 2020, Wolff's contract as team boss will expire. However, the Austrian is also a shareholder of Mercedes and the Formula 1 team, which means that he can remain active at Mercedes with the same role. However, it's not just about the contracts now, but about the entire future of the race stable.

Future of Mercedes

''Together with Niki Lauda and Mercedes, I am the owner of this Formula 1 team and now it's not just about my contract as team boss, but about the future of the team. That is what we are currently discussing with all parties involved," Wolff said in an interview with the Austrian ORF.

The future of Mercedes in Formula 1 is therefore uncertain. Daimler is said to have more of an eye for Formula E and does not intend to stay connected to F1 for very long. Nevertheless, rumours are now going around that Daimler is also interested in bringing Sebastian Vettel to the team as a signboard, but all that remains with rumours.

Aston Martin

Once you talk about rumors, you can't ignore the rumors about Wolff himself. His contract expires and with a newly purchased share package of about 40 million euros, the link with the new F1 team Aston Martin in 2021 is quickly established. According to Wolff, however, this is a personal investment and he still denies a possible switch.

''It's purely a financial investment of mine. I think it's a beautiful and big brand and I believe in the long-term strategy they've presented there. In the long term we'll see if it pays off", concludes Wolff who is also mentioned as the successor of Jean Todt at the FIA or Chase Carey at the top of Formula 1.
