Where one big champion might leave the Formula 1 stage after 2020, we might get another one in return. The seat dance initiated by the departure of Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari leaves an empty seat at Renault. Fernando Alonso could fill it. The Spaniard himself hints at least to something 'important' for next year.

Alonso turns 39 this summer, but over the years his urge to perform does not deteriorate. In fact, he believes he's never been as strong as he is now. It will therefore have been frustrating to have to watch from the sidelines in 2020. Luckily for him, it all turned out differently.

"I'm at my highest level, both physically and mentally, so I want to take on important challenges. Last year I saw that 2020 was going to be a quiet year for me, but then came this pandemic and it is unfortunately very quiet for all athletes," said the two-time world champion during the so-called 'White Week' of the Real Madrid University School.

In 2021 'more important things' than Indy 500

Before moving on to 'important things', this year Alonso makes a third attempt to win the Indianapolis 500, making him only the second driver in history to win the Triple Crown (winning the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indy 500).

"In 2020 I wanted to take it easy and only ride the Indianapolis 500, which is scheduled for 23 August. The plan is to rest well now, recharge the batteries and go back to something important in 2021. The next challenge will be in Formula 1, Endurance or IndyCar".
