The FIA has long had the objective of making Formula 1 more energy neutral. Now it seems that there is more and more a concrete plan to achieve that goal. A first realistic step would be to run the F1 cars on sustainable fuel. Technical director of the FIA Gilles Simon even expects F1 cars to run on 100 percent sustainable fuel by 2023.

"Our goal is to keep the fuel companies at Formula 1, they too must want to support the plan. That's why we want to allow them to take their own path. The condition for this is that the technology is sustainable and the fuel is CO2 neutral," Simon says at Auto, Motor und Sport.

Completely sustainable as early as 2023

The ultimate goal is to build up the competition that can arise between the fuel companies, so that the development is accelerated. "This can also lead to the emergence of completely new technologies. Our goal is to ensure that all developments and processes that take place are sustainable".

Simon has also drawn up a clear timetable. Originally, the plan should have been implemented in steps of 20 percent, but the FIA wants to shorten that tremendously. In 2022, along with the introduction of the new cars, 20 percent biomass fuel will already be added to the current fuel. "By 2023, we want to drive one hundred percent on sustainable fuel in Formula 1," Simon confirms.
