Organisation Singapore GP in 'open dialogue' with Formula 1 about 2020 calendar

In the coming weeks it will become clear what the planned calendar for 2020 will look like. At the moment the expectation is that the Singapore Grand Prix will not be on that calendar, but the organisation there says it is still in talks with Formula 1.

Just like the Monaco Grand Prix, the race in Singapore is organized on a street circuit right in the centre of the city. The construction of this circuit takes months of preparation and that is the reason why this year there will be no racing in Monaco anyway. However, it is still not certain if Singapore will suffer the same fate.

“The Formula 1 calendar for the 2020 season is currently being finalised and Singapore GP has been maintaining an open dialogue with Formula 1, the Singapore Government, and our stakeholders during this time, to assess different possibilities”, said a spokesman for the Grand Prix to Motorsport.com.

Three months of preparation

So the uncertainty is caused by the time it takes to build the circuit. Preparations for this normally start three months in advance. "As the street circuit requires considerable temporary infrastructure, sufficient lead time to complete the construction of the various components must be factored in."

If that doesn't work out, it seems unlikely at the moment that the Grands Prix can be postponed for a few weeks, because then other races will be put under pressure. The original date of 20 September is then expected to be taken over by the Azerbaijani Grand Prix, where less time is needed to build their street circuit.
