Belgian Grand Prix may take place behind closed doors

It was uncertain for some time whether the Belgian Grand Prix would take place after newly announced measures in connection with the coronavirus. It is not allowed to organise large-scale events in Belgium until September, the government decided at the end of April. However, sports events were not included and the circuit then indicated that it was in consultation with FOM and the government. This is now clear.

The Belgian Grand Prix will probably be held on August 30th at Spa-Francorchamps and the government has now given the green light for it. The condition is that the race will take place behind closed doors, which was already the expectation. That the Grand Prix can take place has been decided after consultation by the committee that determines the corona measures. Together with experts they have come to the conclusion that the Grand Prix is feasible, Sporza writes.

This is an important step forward, the next step is the final determination of the race in cooperation with Liberty Media. At this moment 165,000 tickets would have been sold, which can no longer be used. The promoter of Formula 1 will therefore have to come over to compensate for the costs, as an important source of income for this year will be lost.

Formula 1 has yet to confirm an official Belgian Grand Prix.
