On Wednesday there was still talk of chances for Sebastian Vettel at McLaren and Renault, but with the clear rumours that those seats have been filled, the chances for the German are not yet gone.

Options for Vettel

According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Vettel has two other options open. First of all Mercedes still longs for the services of the German driver. Toto Wolff said they can't ignore the developments, but even at Mercedes Vettel won't get the full support he needs as a driver.

If Lewis Hamilton stays with Mercedes he will be the leader and Vettel will have to comply just like Valtteri Bottas. However, it is precisely the reason that Vettel leaves Ferrari, so the options remain limited. McLaren seems to go for Daniel Ricciardo and Renault opts for a return of Fernando Alonso.

Aston Martin

Still, there is one big name in Formula 1 from 2021 onwards: Aston Martin. Lawrence Stroll's team is going to be a factory team in 2021, and with Vettel they could bring in a big driver to shape the project. The question is whether Vettel at 32 will still be open to a new challenge that will take several years.

However, the biggest hurdle for Aston Martin is Sergio Perez' contract. In 2019, the Mexican extended his contract by three more seasons, which means he will be tied until at least 2022. So the only option for Stroll is to buy this contract out, as removing son Lance from the team seems a bit far-fetched.
