The news that Sebastian Vettel will no longer drive for Ferrari after this season came very unexpected Monday night. Until then, the four-time world champion was still seen as the best contender for the seat, because the team also openly expressed their preference for the German.

Now wants the story that not only the outside world was surprised by the news of the departure of Vettel, but also Ferrari itself. According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Vettel would have leaked to the German media on Monday evening, without Ferrari knowing about it. The team was therefore forced to come out the next day with a press release in which they officially confirmed the news.

The marriage between Vettel and Ferrari seems to come to a bitter end. Vettel was reached before 2015 to revive the success years of his great idol Schumacher. Like his predecessor Fernando Alonso, he made a good attempt, but was just short of the championship a couple of times.

Offer Ferrari 'a joke'

Now that the Scuderia with Charles Leclerc has one of the greatest talents of the next generation at its disposal, it was in Maranello time that Vettel took a step back. The contract offered to the man from Heppenheim would reflect that thought.

Initially this would be a one year contract where he would lose his status as first driver and have to surrender a considerable part of his salary. Vettel would have called this offer 'a joke' and interpreted it as a personal insult. A second offer for two years was therefore to no avail.
