Formula 1 is still at a standstill because of the coronavirus. The virus is hacking into many teams and organizations of the races. Claire Williams said earlier that she thinks that maybe several teams will have to leave the sport.

"These are situations you shouldn't underestimate", says Jan Lammers in an interview with Motorsport.com. "Organizations like Williams, which we already knew were having a hard time, are now being hit first again. But on the other hand, this also provides a lot of clarity. You have to take action now anyway. So if all of a sudden it's clear who's in trouble, help is often on the way."

Budget cap

The cost picture of Formula 1 will change considerably as of next season. A budget cap will be set whereby teams will only be allowed to spend $145 million a year. The salary of for example the drivers and a number of important team members such as team bosses will not be included.

FOM and Liberty Media have also announced that there will be an advance on various payouts. Lammers believes that this is the time to think about more far-reaching interventions.

Switching

"This has a huge impact", says Lammers. "I especially hope that we learn from this time, we can now take a much better loss at once and quite rigorously. We'll lose a lot of development costs once, but if you have something much better and more efficient from that moment on, then you need to make a quick switch now."

These changes could not take place quickly, says Lammers: "You have to get a huge institute moving before changes take place, and that indeed takes time. Over the next five years it will remain more or less the same optically, but after that the major changes will take effect."
