Doornbos: "He almost ran the team as a military operation"

Robert Doornbos drove a total of eleven Formula 1 races in 2005 and 2006. In 2006 he was appointed by his old Formula 3000 team boss Christian Horner as a reserve driver of Red Bull Racing.

Formula 3000

"He was my team boss in 2004 in Formula 3000, which is now Formula 2", says Doornbos to Motorsport.com. "Christian led the team in a very good way and was very different from the other team bosses I had worked for."

According to the Dutchman, Horner has a good eye for detail, because the team he drove for actually always had the upper hand. This while all cars were identical in that class.

Military operation

"The pitbox was always neatly painted and everyone walked in neatly", Doornbos says. "This way he almost ran the team like a military operation. And that resulted in a very nice championship in 2004, after which he was allowed to make the switch to Formula 1."

It was announced at the end of 2004 that Red Bull would enter Formula 1 as a constructor after buying the Jaguar team. Horner was appointed team boss and became the youngest team boss ever. "What he's done at Red Bull since then has been just insane", Doornbos ended.
