Formula 1 is currently at a crossroad due to the coronavirus. A decision about the future of the sport needs to be made quickly and that could mean that large manufacturers will decide to leave the pinacle of motorsport.

Departures from Honda, Mercedes and Renault

According to Eddie Jordan, Formula 1 will increasingly move towards a sport that is more about the athletes and the entertainment, than about the teams, motorcycles and cars. It is therefore not surprising that Jordan has the idea that the big names will eventually disappear from the sport, because otherwise it will not be profitable.

''I am convinced that Mercedes, Honda and perhaps Renault will renounce Formula 1 within the next two years. Mercedes can hardly do otherwise. They have already achieved everything they wanted, so under new conditions they will never continue. I think that they sell their team to Lawrence Stroll, who wants to make his son champion," says Jorden to F1-insider.com.

McLaren-Mercedes

The founder of the former Jordan, which now goes under the name of Racing Point, sees Mercedes remain partly active. ''The deal with McLaren is already on the table and I think they will improve their cooperation. If that's the case McLaren could go back to the top," says Jordan, who leaves one top team out of the equation.

According to Jordan, Ferrari will not just leave Formula 1. ''At Ferrari they think very different from the other manufacturers. Ferrari has Formula 1 blood in its veins and leaving Formula 1 is not an option at all. The future of F1 therefore consists of Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and possibly also McLaren-Mercedes'', concludes Jordan.
