Hulkenberg is still in contact with F1 drivers: "See them now and then"

Nico Hulkenberg went into a big interview with some drivers from Formula 1 that he still speaks every now and then. Moreover, the racing driver talks about his chances of a return to the royal class of motorsport and the influence of the coronavirus on that.

"There are some men living in Monaco, I see them now and then", says Hulkenberg at Auto, Motor und Sport. Drivers like Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat have seen or spoken to the German recently. "I was texting a bit with Daniel when the test days started and not so long ago I trained with Kvyat. The contact is there."

Hulkenberg expects an F1 season in 2020

Hulkenberg's contract was not renewed at Renault after last season, but mid-April he didn't have to miss so many race kilometres. Of course that has everything to do with the coronavirus. However, the 32-year old driver suspects that the 2020 season will 'just' come. "The year is still relatively young. I really can't imagine there won't be a Grand Prix this year."

That might also be in Hulkenberg's own interest, because a cancellation of the entire Formula 1 year would in all likelihood mean that he would have to wait another year for his Formula 1 entry, if it comes at all. "Is it more difficult for me to find a seat for 2021 now that there is no driving? That's a good question. It is difficult to answer that question. Somehow everything gets out of balance and the normal rhythm is hard to find. The silly season isn't really happening right now."

Hulkenberg back in 2021?

Without racing, Formula 1 drivers can't distinguish themselves positively or negatively either. Moreover, the new regulations have been moved to 2022, so there doesn't seem to be very much going to happen in 2021. Hulkenberg doesn't know if these kinds of events will affect his chances. "At the moment, everything is speculative. It's impossible to calculate how the cards will fall. The situation is new to everyone. I can only observe and hope that I am in the right place at the right time", he concludes with the German outlet.
